Transparency and accountability
Your voice. Your impact.
Stern’s platform centers on four pillars
1. Infrastructure and facilities
Westmounters will have a city with top-quality, well-maintained roads, parks and public spaces. I will have a detailed assessment of our infrastructure and a Master Plan to update all our roads and infrastructure and a financial plan to implement it. I will provide better facilities for all citizens, at every stage of life, from our young families to our senior citizens.
2. Basic services
Westmounters will have improved services and easier access to Westmount’s facilities. I will restore weekly garbage collection immediately, enforce our high cleanliness standards for streets and public spaces, and update our permitting process to meet the needs of today’s Westmount citizens, while respecting Westmount’s heritage. I will ensure we have a truly inclusive city, one that serves all demographics.
3. Public safety and security
Westmount has been plagued with car thefts, house break-ins, vandalism, and other criminal activity. I will ensure that we provide proper and effective security for all of our residents, including increased security presence and officers on foot and bicycles.
4. Transparency and accountability
Citizens will have clear, accessible explanations about the spending of their tax money. I will ensure our hard-earned funds are spent wisely and purposefully. All citizen requests will be answered in 48 hours. The administration exists to serve the residents. I will ensure our culture is focused on serving you, the residents of Westmount. Everything we do must be with your best interests in mind.

Westmount Residents
to Westmount Independent
Westmounters in Support of Michael Stern for Mayor.
Dear Editor, Westmount Independent,
We are proud Westmount residents who are blessed to be able to raise our families in this community. We are also civic- minded entrepreneurs and businesspeople. Our work has taught us the importance of financial discipline and honed our negotiation skills and consensus building abilities.
Over the past few years, we have grown increasingly concerned about the declining condition of our community’s services, roads, parks and facilities and the efficiency of municipal leadership to plan and provide these services.
We write this letter to highlight the opportunity that Westmount has to improve our services in a pragmatic and cost-effective way.
We need to elect a mayor with strong analytical skills, experience managing budgets and negotiating significant contracts, and the personality to build consensus within our diverse municipality. Michael Stern is the only candidate in our upcoming election who has proven to have all of these attributes.
As a senior audit partner at Ernst & Young, Michael advised many entrepreneurs like us as they have tackled challenging financial and operational questions. He has been a leader in his business and personal communities for decades, and he knows how to work with people of all backgrounds to find solutions.
We have known Michael and his family for a long time, and we are thrilled to see him step forward and offer his considerable skills to improve our community. We urge our fellow Westmounters to hear Michael’s ideas for our city, to meet him at his many public appearances, and to support him as he seeks to improve the Westmount that we all love.

Dear Mr. Price,
As a former Westmount City Councillor who proudly served our municipality for two terms, and as someone who has spent many years as a teacher and a volunteer in numerous community organizations, I have always believed in the importance of strong, principled leadership at the local level.
It is from this perspective – and as a long time, deeply committed resident – that I am proud to endorse Michael Stern for Mayor in the upcoming November 2 municipal election.
For over 35 years, Michael has lived and worked in Westmount, quietly earning the respect of residents, business leaders and charitable organizations. Through his work providing accounting and strategic advice to a broad range of companies and non-profits, he has earned a reputation for sound financial stewardship, measured decision-making and a rare ability to build consensus in challenging environments. His platform is clear and reflects what many of us know to be true:
- our city must do better in delivering what residents rightly deserve;
- improved infrastructure and facilities;
- greater accountability;
- more effective public services;
- enhanced safety and security;all with a renewed commitment to transparency.
This is not just a campaign of ideas – it’s a commitment backed by decades of real-world experience, leadership and deep community roots.
In times of economic pressure and growing demands on local services, we need a leader with financial acumen, integrity and the ability to bring people together. Michael Stern is that leader. He has already proven his ability to make tough decisions and to guide organizations through complex challenges. As Mayor, he will do the same for our city.
I truly believe Michael Stern is the right person to lead us forward. I encourage all residents who care about the future of Westmount to support him as our next Mayor.

I had the chance to sit down with Westmount mayoral candidate Michael Stern and found his vision for the city refreshing. His focus on accountable, transparent government and his financial expertise give me confidence he can ensure our tax dollars are well spent.
He’s also committed to restoring year-round weekly garbage collection — a practical improvement residents will surely notice.
As we look ahead, we need a strong City Council that re-engages citizens and actively manages public service.
Thank you to outgoing mayor Christina Smith for your years of service, and best wishes in your next chapter.

About
Biography of
Michael Stern
Michael Stern is a Chartered Professional Accountant and former Ernst & Young Partner. He understands the value of hard work and dedication. A McGill graduate, he joined Zittrer, Siblin, Stein, Levine, as a young accountant. He very quickly demonstrated that he could earn the trust of his clients and made Partner of the firm while still in his 20s. The firm merged with Ernst & Young, and, as Partner, Michael identified a need to work with entrepreneurs in the community. He built out a practice within the firm catering to medium-sized businesses, including many of Montreal’s most successful entrepreneurs, a practice that flourished under his leadership. He had a strong sense of community and the need to give back, so he hired, trained, and mentored hundreds of young accountants over the years and made sure that Ernst & Young was an active participant in many philanthropic endeavours.
A deeply dedicated person, he spent his entire audit career at the same firm, where he helped many community businesses grow and was instrumental in the success of so many of his clients and colleagues. More recently Michael has been the CFO of two technology firms and advises mid-to-large privately held companies. His strong financial stewardship, and ability to build consensus in challenging environments, makes him an extremely sought after and respected business leader.
Michael’s commitment extended far beyond work. He’s been married to Susan for nearly 50 years, raised three community-minded children and taught them the value of giving back – not just in words, but through action in countless community initiatives. Michael and Susan have been proud Westmount residents since 1990: Susan owned the A.L. Van Houtte on Sherbrooke W. & Claremont, providing many residents with a coffee and smile every day, and now is the head of a not-for-profit organization with its office in Westmount, and Michael served as President of Westmount’s Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue, leading thousands of residents in Westmount and the surrounding area.
In all his personal and professional endeavours, Michael has always gone above and beyond to work with people, find an amicable solution to even the most difficult situations, inspire, uplift, and encourage others.
